How to Recognize Formula 1 Technical Speculations

by on Apr.20, 2012, under Car Accessories, Formula1, Fun

With over millions of fans worldwide, Formula One has made a revolutionary favorite channel for all car enthusiasts since it was first established.

Juan Manuel Fangio's 1951 title-winning Alfa Romeo 159

Governing specific laws and regulations, how many among the audiences during a race circuit are aware of the technical checklists that every contender needs to evaluate to approve his vehicle for the prestigious race. I believe not everyone, but for a brief overview on how things should be done, here are important pointers to appreciate how the rules are honored in Formula One vehicles under the FIA authorities.

To begin with the anatomical structure, dimensions should comply the measurements to a maximum of 180cm wide with a height and length varying at different car specs. However, bodyworks that seem adjustable are not allowed nor alteration in its original aerodynamics.

Michael Schumacher won five consecutive titles with Ferrari

Engines are strictly observed in every Formula One race as this can be criticized by surpassing limitations of Kinetic Energy Recovery System or KERS. According to FIA policy, it is listed that capacity of engines should not be greater than 2.4 liters. The desired 90-degree formation and 8-cylinder valves are approved whereas the use of superchargers and turbochargers are definitely not allowed. Cylinder block and crankcase must be made only from aluminum alloys.

Technical controls pertaining wiring and electrical systems must undergo the specifications of FIA-approved of Electronic Control Unit (ECU). This is to ensure that no interception of engine and gearbox controls will manipulate the control during the race. Accident data recorder is also regulated and each vehicle has to have a track signal information display upon installation of general electrical system. In addition to the control safety features, circuit breaker switch located outside the cockpit is crucial to undergo a series of test. Installing 2 rear-view mirrors, seatbelts and pads are also well assessed prior to run the vehicle.

Talking about transmission, the FIA pays particular detail on using the standard 7-speed semi-automatic gearbox system. Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is prohibited in the regulatory law. However, it is advised that all racers should disengage clutch system outside the cockpit for safety conditions.

Cars wind through the infield section of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the 2003 United States Grand Prix.

Steering power systems handle geometric suspension which drivers can manipulate its structure. In order to prevent alteration of any sort, regulators often assess the symmetrical characteristics carefully to suspect for any deviations. Fortunately, power steering systems are not forbidden for the Formula One race.

Wheels, on the other hand, are standardized to have 4 units of uncovered wheels of using the same materials. Limitations are only allowed at a width range of 305mm to 355mm with rears measurement from 365mm to 380mm.

Alfonso Unlikely Winner of the Malaysian F1 Leg

by on Apr.10, 2012, under Formula1, Fun

After the results of the F1 run in Spain, no one would have guessed that Fernando Alonso would end up atop the championship charts with five points left to spare before the next in line equalizes. With poor performances on the first two pre-season races, Alonso’s plan was to run the next races using a damage limitation mode. But in the Malaysian GP, Alonso scored twenty-five huge points right at the moment when Ferrari had no inkling that their car is actually going to win.
Aside from Alonso, there were other interesting occurrences in the Malaysian F1 leg. Perez, who was also racing on Ferrari engines won second place. His second place performance may have been brought about by a smart decision to enter the pits towards the end of the first lap when the car became wet. Other cars decided to pit after three or four laps and that resulted in Perez establishing himself on third with the McLarens ahead of him. The weather continued to deteriorate and the safety car was set out to neutralize the race. Another amazing run was shown by jean-Eric Vergne on board a Toro Rosso. He started the race at the 18th place and found himself at 7th after a free tire change. Hamilton tactically went into the pits first during the 14th lap but somehow he could not be released safely because of heavy traffic and that had cost him the leading position to Alonso. Strangely, the Ferraris driven by Perez and Alonso always had the advantage over the McLarens and the Sauber. All of a sudden, there is doubt whether the McLaren MP4-27 really had enough features to outrun the Ferrari and it may be stiff compared to the very complaint features of Ferrari especially on wet tracks.
Hamilton finished third for the second week consecutive and Mark Webber ended fourth for the second week in a row as well. However, there is no reason to discount the 2007 champion Kimi Raikonnen who has been consistent in the past few races although he really has to do something drastic in order to register on the radar. The Lotus driver is set to battle it out on all fronts. Mercedes-riding Schumacher was the only flag carrier for Mercedes Benz who went home with race points and he has been showing off consistently in the qualifying races.

Murussia Gives a Sneak

by on Mar.21, 2012, under Formula1, Fun

Lucky are those who have witnessed the unveiling of Murussia Formula 1 for this 2012 season. The event was held at the Silverstone when the Costworth-powered racer was seen by media and car racers fans during a promotional event. The crowd there also witnessed driver Timo Glock drove the car and showed off its paces.
For those who have missed the event, Murussia team posted images of the car on their twitter account to give fans the chance to take a look at the formula 1 car. The move was a patch-up effort for Murussia’s MR01 failure in FIA crash test a week ago. The team also pulled out their scheduled F1 testing in Barcelona to avoid fans and critics speculations.
However everything seem to be running smooth with the former Virgin team when the car only failed one out of 18 tests– rear impact test and the team is determined to pass it so that the team car join the opening grand prix in Australia and hope to be in this new season for 2012 this coming March 18.
Pat Symonds, the team technical consultant confirmed that the test in question has been cleared during an unobserved crash test. The added that the car just has been performing inconsistently during an observed test but all of these has been given prompt attention.
He again asserts that the failure is marginal and the whole team is not ignoring it and they’ve been working to erase that marginal inconsistency. In fact he said that they’ve been delivering the best solution to keep up the car’s paces.
Murussia is scheduled to do a filming day running on a maximum 100km alongside with another Spanish outfit HRT. Both teams has not done any serious testing but it’s in the rule that any team can be allowed to do filming day but with restriction of using demonstration tires and can only do the filming day on Monday or Tuesday only.
The Murussia is happy with a 17 passed tests and although they’re still skeptical on what will happen in Australia when they will be racing without pre-running their new car. It is a struggle that the team has been working on. They are focusing on repeating and passing the crash test and have cancelled their participation in the final pre-season test.
Murussia is founded in 2007 as a Russian supercar marquee and first entered in 2009 Formula 1 as the other half of Virgin Racing. In 2011 F1 season, the team was renamed as Murussia Virgin Racing and has long-term technical partnership with Mclaren. It has a 14th place record best finish in 2011 F1 season.

The Latest F1 Cars

by on Mar.14, 2012, under Formula1, Fun, Uncategorized

As the initial day of the pre-season testing nears its conclusion at the Jerez circuit in Spain, nine Formula teams have released photos and details of the type of cars that they will be using on this year’s F1 World Championship.

Odds on: Sebastian Vettel (right) is favoured for a third title with Mark Webber runner-up

Much to the disappointment of car designers and aestheticists, the F1 managing committee has imposed the installation of what is tagged as the “stepped nose” and all the participants are forced to comply.

Red Bull Racing has been the league leader in F1 races over the past few years. This year, the RB8 will still be driven by championship drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. The Red Bull Racing has recently teamed up with Infiniti and that is the reason why its logos will figure prominently in the car’s chassis and the airbox. There is also a noticeable revision on the RB8’s recognizable yellow, blue, red, and white speed lines, which will remind everyone of the racing colors used by Martini.
This year, team McLaren will be parading its MP4-27 and it will be driven by Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. The MP4 will not be incorporating the stepped nose required revision in its car. Its lower chassis floor allows the McLaren model to avoid the unwanted addition. And this year, McLaren will still be carrying the red and chrome red colors, which have made the car highly identifiable even from afar.
Peter Stevens of Brabham cars fame and Daniel Simon who was responsible for the HRT livery last year were involved in this year’s Sauber C31 appearance.

Mike Epps and Michael Crichton.

With these two car design champions, it is always intriguing to see what kind of machines they are bringing in each F1 race season.

Last February 3, racing enthusiasts were able to take a glimpse on Force India’s 2012 F1 entry VJM05 at the Silverstone circuit. Drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Paul di Resta will be driving the white, orange, and green-colored car.
One of the most awaited appearances in F1 races is that of the Ferrari entry this year. At Maranello, Ferrari launched the F2012. Nevertheless, many were put off by the remarkably angled nose, which, for many, has made this year’s Ferrari the ugliest among its rivals. Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean will be driving for Lotus this year and they will be maneuvering the latest Lotus E20. Last year’s exhausts have been removed but the gold and black livery still remains.

Formula 1 Car Aerodynamics

by on Mar.13, 2012, under Formula1, Uncategorized

When you talk of Formula 1 cars and the F1 race, the science of aerodynamics will definitely form part of the conversation. Aerodynamics plays a very vital role in enhancing the Formula 1 car’s pace and grip.

Star of the Retromobile Show

This science dictates that in order to attain maximum speed, a vehicle has to have optimum downward force and the least drag possible. But lately, the FIA has imposed a few revisions in their rules regarding the allowable design on F1 cars clipping away the winglets and other aerodynamic components.
One of the reasons why Formula 1 cars can accomplish so much speed is because of the material used in making the vehicle’s body. The body of Formula 1 cars is usually made from ultra-lightweight materials such as carbon fiber. Nevertheless, since there is a minimum weight requirement imposed by the Formula 1 ruling body, constructors attach ballasts onto the cars. Aside from weight compliance, these ballasts provide a way of evenly distributing the weight making the car more stable even when driving fast on sharp curves.
For so long, Formula 1 cars have been powered by 3.0-liter V10 engines but in 2006, FIA imposed the use of the 2.4-liter V8 engines. And to further reduce fuel consumption among its racers, Formula 1 cars are now only allowed to run on engines limited to 19,000 rpm.

Star of the Retromobile Show

Add to this the rule that only iron alloys and aluminum are to be used as materials in constructing Formula 1 cars.
The world championship for Formula 1 is a series of races held in various circuits and they are called Grand Prix races. There are special venues for Formula 1 races but in other areas such as the Monte Carlo Grand Prix and the Monaco Grand Prix, the races are done in the streets. Although the Grand Prix races are now done in various parts of the world, the center of Formula 1 activity is still in Europe where these races all began. Some of the oldest venues for the Formula 1 Grand Prix races include the Monza Circuit in Italy and the Silverstone Circuit located in England. But the other new circuits offer unique racing opportunities. Take for example the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia famous for its extended straight roads offering more opportunities for the F1 drivers to strategically overtake their rivals. The makers of the Bahrain Circuit spared no expense in building a high tech desert track while the Japanese Suzuka Circuit has always been known to be quite a challenge for F1 drivers.

Green Car News

by on Feb.23, 2012, under Formula1, Green Cars

Gordon Murray, five-time Formula One champion and current Head Designer of McLaren’s F1, is now into making green cars. His very first pet green car was tagged as T25, and now he has come up with a newer version called the T27.  As Head Designer of McLaren for F1, he achieved a feat that no man has ever done – built a car that runs on a hundred miles to the gallon.  It was the T25, and the T27 promises to do better. Equipped with an electric motor, the T27 is considered as a green car in every aspect.

Next year, Formula One racing is already geared to set the green setup on its guidelines next year. Stakeholders all agreed that they would be utilizing new types of engines for the Formula One race in the year 2013, hence, the mixed reactions coming from car manufacturers. However is already set to transform the popular event into an eco-friendly next generation race as soon as it can be done. As announced by the federation Internationale de l’Automobile or FIA, its governing body is setting new rules on the coming F1 races.

Nevertheless, Mercedes and Ferrari are putting their green car projects in the backburner stating the fact that moves to alter their current engine design will mean additional expense at a time when Formula One concurred in the plan to reduce cost. Ferrari even mentioned that it would be surprised if the plan to go green on the engines pushes through. But, in the event that it does, they will work with it as agreed by the council. It is obvious that the Formula One organizing group wants the world of racing to know that they are hell bent on advocating car fuel efficiency and push for concrete actions in the move to make their cars eco-friendly.

In fact, the 2.4liter V8 engines that Formula One race cars use today will not be utilized soon. In lieu would be the much “greener” 1.6 liter four cylinder turbo engines designed with fuel control and energy recovery systems. The F1 organization is noticeably geared towards the promotion of green technology in their cars as well as the utilization of cleaner, eco-friendly fuel, and they intend to set this standard for years to come.

Hurray for Gordon Murray and his super efficient T27. Hurray for a cleaner, more fuel efficient F1 races.
